Odissi Madhuriya
Syllabus & Curriculum

Odissi is one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, with roots over 2,000 years old, originating in the temples of Odisha as a devotional offering to deities, especially Lord Jagannath.

Characterized by graceful movements, intricate footwork, and expressive gestures, it narrates stories from Hindu scriptures like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Geeta Govinda. Performed traditionally by Maharis (women devoted to temple service), Odissi was a spiritual expression aimed at connecting dancer, deity, and audience. Its fluid torso movements and sculptural poses mirror the carvings of Odisha’s ancient temples. Though it has evolved into a performance art, it retains its devotional essence, worship in motion.
